The Mary Jemison Academy, available through Genesee Valley BOCES, will provide a personalized, online educational program to meet the learning needs of accelerated secondary students. An advisory model will ensure that each student is connected with a teacher who will guide their learning journey throughout the program and across all courses. Advisory teachers will be focused on ensuring the success stories about 16 students to allow for regular contact. A team of six staff will serve as subject area specialists to a cohort of up to 100 of their advisory students. As more students join the academy in the second and third years of the project, multi-age cohorts will be formed to build a supportive community. Genesee Valley BOCES administrators from Distance Learning, School Improvement, Model Schools, and the School Library System will lead professional development efforts and facilitate appropriate, effective, and playful implementation of learning technologies to drive student success as they accelerate to graduation.
